Prokofiev   Concerto No. 1 for Violin in D major
Holst   The Planets

As the 20th Century blossomed with scientific discovery all aspects of society began pushing limits which allowed for a greater expression of individualism than ever before. In the shadow of two world wars, this individualism carried into all art forms and particularly can be heard in the music of the time. In this concert we feature two pieces that represent this expression of individualism. In Holst’s iconic work The Planets, experience a one of a kind ride through space, with wild rhythms and colorful harmonies said to have inspired John William’s Star Wars. Prokofiev’s individualism is also on display in Concerto No. 1 for Violin in D major, featuring the brilliant violinist, Simone Porter. Prokofiev pushed the traditional form of the violin concerto in a different direction with this piece, with more exciting rhythms and colorful harmonies than had never been done before.
