The 2nd Annual Oklahoma City Jazz Festival is a weeklong celebration that will take place in different parts of OKC from September 21st through September 26th. The Civic Center Music Hall is happy to host some of those events, including American Jazz Pianist David Benoit on September 25th at 8pm at the Thelma Gaylord Performing Arts Theatre.

David Benoit:
Since launching his recording career in 1977, David Benoit's expansive career as a contemporary jazz pianist has included over 25 solo recordings. His '80s releases "This Side Up", "Freedom at Midnight" and the GRAMMY® nominated "Every Step of the Way" are considered influential genre classics. Among his other GRAMMY® nominations are those for Best Instrumental Composition (for Dad's Room, from 1999's Professional Dreamer) and Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance (for the All-Star Big Band). His prolific output since 2000 includes several prominent Charlie Brown related projects (including "Here's To You, Charlie Brown: 50 Great Years" and the star-studded "40 Years: A Charlie Brown Christmas") that reflects his lifelong passion for the music of original Peanuts composer Vince Guaraldi and solidify Benoit's role as his musical heir. Benoit has also released the Billboard Contemporary Jazz charting albums Fuzzy Logic, Right Here, Right Now, Full Circle and Heroes, which paid homage to the pianist's top jazz and pop influences.

Benoit's ever expanding slate of orchestral music endeavors include his ongoing roles as conductor of the Asia America Symphony Orchestra and leading such eminent orchestras as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the symphonies of London, Nuremberg, San Francisco, Atlanta, San Antonio, and San Jose. Concurrent with his burgeoning career as a conductor, he recorded 1996's American Landscape with The London Symphony Orchestra and 2005's Orchestral Stories with members of the Asia America Symphony Orchestra and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra. Orchestral Stories featured his first piano concerto "The Centaur and the Sphinx" and his acclaimed symphonic piece "Kobe," both of which he has performed in live settings across the country. In 2009, Benoit performed and conducted Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story" with the Asia America Symphony Orchestra in a show that included Broadway great Lea Salonga; he later conducted Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the same orchestra in his critically acclaimed debut at Los Angeles' Disney Hall.

Benoit's notable film scores include The Stars Fell on Henrietta, produced by Clint Eastwood and starring Robert Duvall; and The Christmas Tree, produced by Sally Field, voted Best Score of 1996 by Film Score Magazine. Benoit has also been a longtime guest educator with the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, winning the organization's "excellence in music education" award in 2001.

 Belshazzar's Feast

In selected text from the Bible, the story of Belshazzar's Feast is told. The Jews are in exile in Babylon and after a feast at which Belshazzar, the Babylonian king, commits sacrilege by using the Jews' sacred vessels to praise the heathen gods, he is miraculously killed, the kingdom falls, and the Jews regain their freedom. The mounting drama of this story is depicted through orchestral power and choral strength.

Stavinsky's Symphony of Psalms

One of the most important composers of the 20th century, Stravinsky wrote the famous ballet "Firebird" and "The Rite of Spring", his music earning him the reputation as a musical revolutionary who pushed the boundaries of musical design. Commissioned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, this choral symphony derives its name from the use of psalm texts in the choral parts. Stravinsky chose three Psalms from the Old Testament. Psalms numbers 38, 39 and 150. The secret of this 23-minute work is its relationship between chorus and orchestra. Stravinsky flouted basic conventions. This idea of creating a lean sound with so many wind instruments was not new to Stravinsky, and helps give this work its distinctive sound.

(You'll shoot your eye out kid!") A kooky leg lamp, outrageous pink bunny pajamas, a maniacal department store Santa, and a double-dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole are just a few of the distractions that stand between young Ralphie and his Christmas wish.

LEWIS BLACK, Grammy Award-winning stand-up comedian, is one of the most prolific and popular performers working today. He executes a brilliant trifecta as stand-up comedian, actor and author. Receiving critical acclaim, he performs over 200 nights a year to sell out audiences throughout Europe, New Zealand, Canada and United States. He is one of a few performers to sell out multiple renowned theatres including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Brooks Atkinson Theatre, New York City Center, the Main Stage at the Mirage in Las Vegas and most recently a sold out Broadway run at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in NYC.

His live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. He is a passionate performer who is a more pissed-off optimist than mean-spirited curmudgeon. Lewis is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world.

LEWIS BLACK came into national prominence with his appearances on THE DAILY SHOW in 1996. Those appearances on THE DAILY SHOW led to comedy specials on HBO, Comedy Central, Showtime and Epix. In 2001, he won the Best Male Stand-Up at the American Comedy Awards. He has released eight comedy albums, including the 2007 Grammy Award-winning "The Carnegie Hall Performance." LEWIS BLACK won his second Grammy Award for his album "Stark Raving Black." Lewis has published three bestselling books, Nothing's Sacred (Simon & Schuster, 2005), Me of Little Faith (Riverhead Books, 2008) and I'm Dreaming of a Black Christmas (Riverhead Books, 2010).

Top Girls is a 1982 play by Caryl Churchill. It is about a woman named Marlene, a career-driven woman who is only interested in women's success in business. As the play unfolds we find Marlene has left her 'poor' life, and illegitimate child with her sister Joyce, in order to tread the path to 'success'. The play is contemporary and examines the role of women in society and what being a successful woman means.
